Food Truck Strikes Children, Killing 1

ATLANTA, GA – An accident involving two boys has left one of them dead.

The incident happened late Thursday night on Eloise Court in southeast Atlanta. The driver of a Dyan Food truck, a convenience store on wheels, had stopped at Eloise Court around 9:15 p.m. Thursday to make the rounds in the southeast Atlanta neighborhood.

Police said the boys were hanging onto a food wagon when the driver started pulling away and ran the children over.

“The driver asked the children to get off the vehicle. He asked the parents to assist in getting the children back,” Capt. Van Hobbs with the Atlanta Police Department said.

Investigators say when the truck started moving the kids jumped off. They believe the driver accidently ran over them.

“One of the parents said ‘You just struck my child.’ He stopped and backed up and that’s when a second child was struck,”

Medics rushed a 10-year-old to Grady Memorial Hospital where he died from his injuries.

The other child’s great grandmother said a 7-year-old injured his legs arms and back.

People who live in the neighborhood say they sympathize with the parents and the children, but they said they also felt sorry for the driver, who they said is well-liked and has served this community for years.

“The community ought to be thankful that he does what he does because a lot of people don’t have transportation to be able to feed their kids. He provides a service and he’s a blessing to the community,” Rico Eady said.

Police are not releasing the names of the children.

Police said the incident is still under investigation and so far no charges have been filed.
