TEMPE, AZ – Food trucks in Tempe may soon be facing fewer operating restrictions. A new city ordinance aims to improve the business environment for these mobile restaurants.

One of the biggest changes food truck owners could see is an increased amount of time they can do business in one place, from one hour to four.

If passed, the ordinance would amend a city code that only broadly addresses what’s known as “mobile merchants.”

“Previously it hadn’t addressed food tucks specifically at all, so the council wanted to put some things in place to speak directly to food trucks since they are so popular today,” said Nikki Ripley, a spokesperson with the city of Tempe.

This is welcome news for food truck owner Brian Webb who runs Hey Joe Filipino Street Food with his wife. He spoke to us during Wednesday’s lunch hour.

“If they let us stay longer than an hour that would be great,” said Webb.

Tempe City Councilmembers will be voting on the ordinance on Thursday.
