DENVER, CO - Independent push-cart food vendors who have been operating in Lower Downtown around Coors Field for years have been abruptly ordered by the city to relocate.

The city told several vendors in mailed letters that it was a mistake that they were ever allowed to operate that close to the ballpark.

The vendors say they are being unfairly targeted either for financial-competition reasons or because their removal is considered the “quick fix” to cut traffic and alcohol-related violence in the area.

The bottom line is there will be far fewer vendor food options for fans walking to Coors Field this season.

“I put a lot of time into building this location,” said Adam Kulikowski, who had been operating a food cart near 19th and Wazee streets.

Kulikowski said he and about 10 other vendors who operated in the area surrounding Coors Field were ordered by the city to relocate outside the ballpark vicinity — or their permits would be revoked.

The city and county of Denver told 7News there was a “mistake” made in the original permit process and the vendors should have never been allowed to operate right around the stadium, which opened in 1995.

9News reported that city officials said the carts should never have been allowed within the area bordered by 20th Street, Market Street, Park Avenue West and Wynkoop Street.

denver food cartDENVER, CO - Push-cart food vendors in Denver are concerned they may soon be pushed out of business because of an old Denver ordinance.

“It’s food, not alcohol so what’s the problem,” asked a vendor who didn’t want to be identified.

The problem surrounds a 1985 ordinance that states push-cart vendors can’t sell food after midnight. Vendors often sell everything from ribs to hot dogs out of the carts outside popular bars and nightclubs in downtown Denver.

A vendor told 7NEWS he makes a large majority of his money around the time clubs are closing.

“I’ve calculated it to be 70 or 80 percent of our money comes between 1:30 a.m. and 2:30 a.m. — just when the most people are out there on the street,” the vendor said.

Public works employees have been issuing warnings in recent weeks to vendors who sell food after midnight. 7NEWS went to the department for answers.

“I can absolutely understand their concerns,” said Ann Williams, spokeswoman for Denver Public Works.

Williams said the department is aware of vendor concerns and that it’s up to the city council to change the wording of the ordinance. Until the council decides to change or keep the restriction, the department will only issue warnings to vendors.

“As far as the time restrictions go, they should go ahead and continue with what they had been doing, knowing that we aren’t going to cite them for a time restriction violation right now until we get this resolved,” Williams said.

There’s no clear timeline of how long it will take the council to decide on changing or keeping the ordinance.

DENVER, CO - The days of walking out of class and finding a wide array of food trucks to choose from on the Auraria campus are over. Well, not exactly over — but things have changed. On November 1, a new policy went into effect that limits any gourmet food-truck visits to the Auraria campus to Monday, and also limits the number of trucks that can come in that day.

And some student organizations, which bring the trucks to campus to help raise funds for their causes and events, are not too thrilled with the new policy.

Food trucks have been on a roll in the Denver area for three years — but until now, there was no policy in place regulating trucks on campus. The Auraria Higher Education Center decided to create a policy for several reasons, according to Jerry Mason, director of Support Services: “One was to create a specific location for the food trucks so that they did not pose an egress issue or safety risk for student pedestrians,” he says. “The other was to create equity and balance among the existing food vendors already on campus. These existing food operations have leases and pay directly back to the campus to keep student fees low and provide scholarship opportunities for students.”

The new policy states that food vendors will only be allowed on campus on Mondays, when there is a maximum of four locations alloted them in the Lawrence Way turnaround between St. Cajetan’s Center and the King Center. The vendors have to pay a $75 fee to get one of those spots; student organizations or departments can make a reservation for the truck through the Student Activities or Student Life offices. Metropolitan State University Denver, Community College of Denver and University of Colorado Denver will rotate reservation priority on a weekly basis.

AHEC has been discussing the policy since April, and finally decided on it last month. Stephanie Madison, a student at MSU Denver and president of the Social Action Through Art Student Organization, says AHEC didn’t consult the student body before making the decision, which she opposes. “A lot of us were upset because we had just found out that week that this policy change was going into place,” Madison says. “No one ever told any of the student clubs in April that this was going to be taking place, or got any feedback from the students.”

Mason insists that the information was available to students. “The policy change was reported by several of the student newspapers on campus and shared with the three institutions that AHEC serves,” he says. “The specific Policy Development & Shared Operations Committee meeting [where] this policy was finalized was open to the public, and students were given the opportunity to voice their opinion at this meeting.” There is also student representation on the committee itself, he notes.

But Madison, who attended the meeting, says the students weren’t treated fairly. “There was actually a lady yelling at us to get out, that she could no longer listen to us because they have stuff on their agenda,” she recalls. “When a couple students did get up, who had prepared speeches to present in front of the boardmembers, half of the table of boardmembers was talking among themselves, reading things, writing stuff down. They were not paying attention. They were not interested in what we had to say at all.”

This week’s 5 on Friday we spoke with the owner of the Denver based food truck, Biker Jim’s Gourmet Dogs.

biker jim

Name:  Jim Pittenger

Age:  Me or the truck?

Food truck name:  Biker Jim’s Gourmet Dogs

Location: Denver or wherever

Year started in the mobile food industry: 2005

Mobile Cuisine: Why did you become a food truck owner, chef?

Jim Pittenger: It was easier than becoming rocket surgeon.  That and I had pushed the safety limits of my previous job as a repo man.

MC: Who has been the most influential person in your culinary career?

JP: Probably my friend M.A. in Alaska (M.A.’s Gourmet Dogs)  He told me I should sell hot dogs on a street corner, I’d be good at putting wieners in peoples mouths.

MC: What do you think sets your truck apart from your competitors?

JP: The badass wrap on the outside and the badass brats on the inside…oh yeah, we’re pretty badass at serving those things.

MC: What are your plans for the future? Where do you see yourself and your food truck in 2 and 5 years?

JP: Truck?  You mean trucks don’t you?

MC: What one suggestion would you give to someone planning to open a food new truck?

JP: If you’re looking for a job forget it.  However, this just might be the funnest, weirdest, most rewarding thing you can do.  The best quote I’ve ever heard about street vending is, “This is the hardest I’ve ever worked for easy money!”

In our quest to keep our readers up to date with the latest stories relating to the food truck industry has compiled a list of the stories that hit the wire this weekend from Washington DC, Indianapolis, Denver, Chicago and Tennessee.

José Andrés Will Launch His First Food Truck in DC – Washington DC - Last week, José Andrés first revealed that he’s been keeping a secret food truck named Pepe right here in Washington and has been quietly running tests. At the time, it wasn’t quite clear what connection that truck had to the one he previously announced he was launching in Miami. But now, the Spanish chef confirms to Eater that not only is this truck a totally separate thing, but also that it will launch first — perhaps as soon as late-February, though the date is still to be determined.

The truck will be running only in the District proper and only at lunchtime. And, given its name and the chef behind it, Pepe is going to be rolling with a Spanish-influenced menu.

Food Trucks: New Trend Equals New Risk - Popping up in metro areas across the country, popular food trucks have triggered festivals, a reality show, even lawsuits.

Food truck operators have filed lawsuits in Georgia, New York and California protesting bans on mobile eateries, while brick and by mortar establishments have also sued, complaining of competition and reduced sales.

Despite the challenges of dealing with a new market and its potential risks, Chartis, along with Matthew Carlson, vice president of Risk Strategies Co., a national retail brokerage firm, recently developed a food truck program that includes insurance coverage for general liability, automobile, business interruption, crime, mobile equipment and food spoilage losses.

Centerplate Debuts Blue Bear Burgers BBQ Truck at SIA Snow Show – Denver, CO – Most of Denver’s food trucks have gone into hibernation this winter, but the Blue Bear Burgers and BBQ truck is out and about, making its debut appearance in the shadow of its 40-foot-tall inspiration, just outside the SIA Snow Show at the Colorado Convention Center. Centerplate, the largest hospitality partner to North America’s premier sports stadiums, convention centers, and entertainment venues, is using an array of locally sourced ingredients for the Blue Bear Truck.

Food truck pop-ups slinging chicken and waffles, tamales and wine – Chicago, IL - Pop-up dinners have become a great way for many of Chicago’s food trucks to elevate their business and show off the chops that led many mobile purveyors into a career as a street food vendor. This winter, a few of these trucks have partnered with bars, whiskey distilleries, and even wine shops, bringing together food with sponsored drink pairings. Even though the weather is frigid, making outdoor dining obsolete, Chicagoans can still experience the best of Chicago’s street food with these upcoming pop-up food truck events.

Urban food truck to test-drive market – Williamson County, TN – The Grilled Cheeserie, a hit concept among Nashville’s growing fleet of food trucks, is planning to carry its mobile comfort food concept south.

The Grilled Cheeserie plans to serve lunch in Williamson County no later than March, announcing its location through social media.

Crystal De Luna Bogan, owner of the Grilled Cheeserie, said the amount of requests to come to the area, along with the number of Williamson County residents who have gone to Nashville to buy lunch on the weekends, prompted the decision to begin serving the county.
