 — For a little extra summer cash, Demosthenes “Demo” Megaloudis, 12, and his brother Alexandrous “Alex,” 11, often help their parents take orders and load supplies onto Gussy’s Greek Food truck.

But on Tuesday, they were donating their time. Following through on an idea inspired by their father and their parish, St. Barbara Greek Orthodox Church of Durham – the boys helped serve a free lunch dedicated to the men trying to restart their lives at Durham Rescue Mission.

Although they had served with the food truck at St. Barbara, they wanted to do something more. They considered a homeless shelter as as an ideal, and landed on Durham since their family is heavily invested in the city.

Along with three other food trucks, Stuft, Chick-N-Que, and Not Just Icing, Gussy’s Greek Food gave away a total of 210 meals of barbecue, gourmet potatoes, gyros and cupcakes from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Spotty rain showers did not deter the men, who stood in steady lines in the East Main Street campus parking lot for the food before returning to class at the mission or to shifts at work.

During the past few years, food trucks have become a fixture of the Triangle, growing in rapid numbers and creating a family-like community, said Gus Megaloudis, owner of Gussy’s Greek Food.

Apparently, they are a family characterized by being eager to serve, donating a day’s wages and a truckload of $5 to $8 meals.

Not Just Icing served around 180 of their $3 cupcakes in less than two hours.

“I made four calls, and I got four trucks,” said Megaloudis, although one truck’s generator died at the last minute.

Megaloudis said that the day cost him about $500 to $600 in meals.

“There are some things money cannot make you feel,” Megaloudis said.

The giveaway saved the mission about $430 the center would have spent on the men’s lunch. Tony Gooch, director of developmental operations at the mission, said summers can be difficult as the food banks become lower on food and donations slow when people leave for vacation.

Local food truck trend goes into overdrive – BOSTON, MA - Come April, the city will have 56 trucks dishing food across Boston neighborhoods, up from just 15 when the city first cautiously kicked the tires of the trend in July 2011. Food trucks are coming to new parts of the city, including East Boston, Roxbury, and Charlestown, and those locations that started with one truck now have three or more, bringing a diverse mix of cuisines and cultures to the streets of a city once famous for its parochial tastes.

Trucks across the city now serve everything from Southern comfort food to Asian barbecue. The trend has become so popular that local truck chefs have their own food festivals and cooking contests, and some operators are even opening their own brick-and-mortar restaurants. Meantime, there is a growing network of businesses such as truck repair and emergency staffing to support them.

Gorilla Cheese partners split up – HAMILTON, CANADA - One of Hamilton’s glowing business success stories is turning into a messy divorce.

The partners behind the popular Gorilla Cheese food truck have split, leaving the future of the business in doubt and debt.

“We intended this to be an amicable divorce, but as with any divorce things are starting to get complicated,” said Graeme Smith, who with Scott and Susan Austin, started the wildly popular food truck business in July 2011.

“Now we’re in a state of day-to-day trying to get by.”

Food trucks emblem of Durham’s ‘D.I.Y. District’ – DURHAM, NC - Chef Stacey Grisham said he was a little concerned about cold weather Sunday, but he needn’t have been.

“It looks like it’s going to be a beautiful day,” he said at about noon, as he and more than 30 other vendors were opening for business at the food-truck rodeo in Durham Central Park.

The Refectory Cafe, where Grisham is head chef, was making its first appearance at a food-truck rodeo on the cool, but sunny, afternoon.

You may have missed it, but the mobile food industry is growing faster than anyone would have guessed two years ago. It can be difficult to keep up with the new trucks and carts as they pop up throughout the country. Because of this, Mobile Cuisine assists our readers weekly by posting the names and information about these trucks, so if they happen to be in your area, you can begin to follow them, or at least keep any eye out for them on the roads and cart pods.

DURHAM, NC - Durham city leaders could adopt new rules for popular food trucks today.

durham food truck rodeo

The city council meets tonight at 7 p.m. to decide on the new rules.

The current proposal would limit where food trucks can set up shop keeping at least 50 feet between themselves and the main entrance or outdoor dining area of any restaurant.

Planners also considered proposing a buffer for the Durham Farmers’ Market and other “special events,” but dropped that idea after it drew complaints at a July public hearing.

If the new rules pass, food truck vendors will also have to register their vehicles with the planning department and pay a $10 fee.

In our quest to keep our readers up to date with the latest stories relating to the food truck industry has compiled a list of the stories that hit the wire this weekend from Dallas, Santa Ana, Charlotte, Durham, Atlanta and Martinez.

July 13

New food truck park off I-35E in Dallas opens mid-August – DALLAS, TX - A new food truck park in Dallas is opening in the business district near Mockingbird Lane and I-35E. Called Ambassador Row Food Truck Park, the trucks will serve from a grassy area in front of a building owned by U.S. Food Trucks.

Inside U.S. Food Truck’s building is a commissary for on-the-roll chefs. So it made sense to set up a lunch and dinner spot right outside, said Michael Rangel, president of U.S. Food Trucks. The park will have four to six food trucks at a time and will serve lunch Wednesday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and dinner on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. The facility will open the third week in August.

California’s Food Truck Shakedown – Santa Ana, CA - We would all laugh at a man who, sinking in millions of dollars in house payments, car loans, and credit card bills, decided to fix his problem by looking for spare quarters lurking behind the cushions of his sofas.

Likewise, we should shake our heads at the way the state of California—with a budget deficit approaching $16 billion and hundreds of billions of dollars in unfunded pension and retiree medical benefits—is stepping up tax collection to help plug a hole caused by its chronic overspending.

On Tuesday, I met in Santa Ana with about 12 owners of catering trucks—those mobile restaurants that sell mostly Mexican food—and they told a disturbing tale of how the state’s Orwellian-named tax agency, the Board of Equalization, is targeting and mistreating them. The people assembled in the room blamed state tax authorities more than the economy for their tough times.

Food Trucks Get Hungry For The DNC – CHARLOTTE, NC – Large crowds will converge on Charlotte for the Democratic National Convention. Many will need a quick dining option between events; local food trucks are prepping their menus and heating up their grills, hoping for a piece of the action.

Brian Seeley has been running the Herban Legend food truck and sizzling up his menu for the last year, “Arabic shwarma…it’s a chicken pita with tzatziki sauce and tabouleh.”

The Herban Legend has attracted a following that can’t get enough of its tasty options. Reed Carlson is one of his usual customers. He says the food is affordable and delicious, “You get a great meal, it’s fresh, it’s juicy and that’s all you want with a burger.”

Atlanta Street Food Festival successful, with a few kinks – ATLANTA, GA - Yesterday was the first Atlanta Street Food Festival. And while most visitors seemed to really enjoy the event at Piedmont Park, Midtown Atlanta, like most first things, it had a few issues.

The festival, hosted by Enchanted Events of Atlanta, brought together some of the best, new food trucks in the ATL. Despite forecasts of scattered thunderstorms, the rain mostly held off. Temperatures were in the low 90’s. While that’s toasty, it is better than the 100F+ temperatures of just a couple weeks ago. Lots of food trucks to choose from, plus specialty tents, vendors and live music.

Food Truck Trend Reaches All – MARTINEZ, CA - Free fresh fruits and vegetables will soon be distributed from a mobile “food truck,” rotating among three Martinez locations. Up to six times a month, any resident who needs help keeping nutritious food on the table can pull up to the Food Bank of Contra Costa and Solano’s new mobile community produce program and take their fill.

Instead of hawking pricey asian fusion tacos or gourmet cupcakes, Food Bank employees staffing the food truck will be handing out fruits and vegetables such as celery, carrots, onions, oranges, melons and potatoes from bins lining the inside of a converted beverage delivery truck.

DURHAM, N.C. (AP) — Some Durham food truck owners and fans have been left sour tastes in their mouths after the city council considered restrictions on the mobile eateries.

The Durham City Council chamber was overflowing Monday night while council members reviewed tightening rules for food trucks. The city is home to one of the state’s largest food truck communities and other cities such as Raleigh and Chapel Hill are moving toward loosening their rules.

The restrictions include banning food trucks from setting up on public property within 50 feet of a restaurant, requiring a 300-foot buffer for downtown areas and limiting the food trucks to one parking space.

The Durham Alliance for Food Innovation and Entrepreneurship opposed many of the changes. City staff members don’t expect a vote until the fall.
