You may have missed it, but the mobile food industry is growing faster than anyone would have guessed five years ago. It can be difficult to keep up with the new trucks and carts as they pop up throughout the world. Because of this, Mobile Cuisine assists our readers weekly by posting the names and information about these trucks, so if they happen to be in your area, you can begin to follow them, or at least keep any eye out for them on the roads and cart pods.

RENO, NV – How about a side of grits with that?

Customers ordering a burger with everything on it aren’t used to hearing that at most northern Nevada eateries, which is what helps set Mount Mogrit Gourmet food truck apart.

Mount Mogrit Gourmet

“A lot don’t know what grits are, some say they don’t like them and I say humor me and try it,” says Brad Stocking, owner of the Reno-based business. “These are flavored more than traditional grits.”

Stocking, who debuted his food truck in September at the Reno Balloon Races, serves three homemade flavors of grits —rosemary cheddar, spinach mozzarella and pepper Jack — and is working on a fourth he calls sweet potato and Gruyere. All are made from recipes Stocking concocted and with polenta, a finely-grained cornmeal, rather than the typical hominy or corn.

“I like to say, ‘It’s creamy goodness like you’ve never had before,’” says Stocking.

Besides the specialty grits, Mount Mogrit’s menu includes burgers, and tri-tip, chicken and pork, all offered as a sandwich, wrap or salad and marinated in one of three sauces — teriyaki, rosemary mustard or Cajun ginger — created by Stocking and made from scratch.

“Both my wife and I love to cook,” says Stocking. “I’ve always barbecued and I pride myself on not drying out the meat, on doing a nice piece of meat that is still juicy and not like shoe leather.”

Stocking got the idea for Mount Mogrit after getting laid off from Sierra Nevada Corp. in August 2011 and deciding he was finished working for other people. He talked it over with his wife Karen and two children, Christine and Matthew, who work on the truck at special events and in their spare time.

Food Truck Owners to Meet With Reno City Council – Reno, NV - Last month, mobile, food vendors in our area received a proposed food ordinance from the City of Reno, but some local food truck owners have written a counterproposal.

Nancy Horn, with Dish Café said she and her husband are opening a food truck this spring. She said when they received the food ordinance proposed by the City, they decided to round up other mobile, food vendors.

Planners seek more time to chew on sandwich truck proposal – Napa Valley, CA - A well-cured pastrami sandwich can seemingly melt in the mouth. But whether to allow a delicatessen on wheels in downtown Napa is proving a tough matter for city planners to chew on.

On Thursday night, the Planning Commission delayed a decision on granting a use permit to Pastranomy, a food truck whose owners hope to set up shop in a private parking lot at the northeast corner of Main and Clinton streets.

Japadog takes a bite out of Big Apple – New York City, NY - Japadog, Vancouver’s outrageously quirky hotdog chain, has opened a storefront restaurant in New York City.

Food Fights and Free Enterprise - It is sometimes said, following Milton Friedman’s insight, that business is not a friend to the free market, and the truth of this is no more evident than in recent battles between established restaurateurs and operators of mobile eateries.

Mobile food craze clashes with Bay Area brick-and-mortar restaurants – SF Bay Area, CA - From Alice Waters to Michael Mina, the San Francisco Bay Area has become a mecca for innovative chefs and the food connoisseurs who follow them. But when it comes to one culinary trend, the area is still catching up.

Food trucks — already popular alternatives to brick-and-mortar restaurants in cities such as Los Angeles, Portland and Washington, D.C. — are rolling into parking lots and plazas in San Francisco and across the Peninsula in increasing numbers.

RENO, NV - We’re seeing more mobile food trucks around Reno these days.

The trucks dish out quick meals to people outside bars and businesses. It’s a convenience for most, but these restaurants on wheels are now getting a few complaints.

GourMelt Reno Food truck

Food truck and restaurant owners aren’t exactly seeing eye to eye, and Reno City Council is considering some regulation changes.

“This is America. We should be able to compete with restaurant owners,” says Joe Horn, co-owner of Dish Cafe.

Horn invested $150,000 into a brand new mobile food truck just last week. But now, those plans could be halted.

New proposed restrictions would essentially keep all food trucks out of downtown, and only allow them to do business between 7 a.m. and 10 p.m. Trucks would also only be allowed to stay in one location up to two hours.

They wouldn’t be allowed to set up shop within 300 feet of other businesses either, eliminating a downtown presence.

“There’s literally a restaurant within 300 feet of almost every area of downtown,” says Horn.

Gourmelt mobile food truck would feel the effects of these possible changes as well. Co-owner Jessie Watnes says the rule changes would cut business by one third.

“This is our livelihood now,” she says. “To think, after only seven months, we could be shut down. It’s scary and sad.”

She says most businesses have no problem with Gourmelt selling food right outside their building, and says Gourmelt is respectful of nearby restaurants.

“We don’t like to park really close to other restaurants, out of courtesy.”
