CARLSBAD, CA — Carlsbad City Council amended its municipal code to allow the San Diego County Department of Environmental Health to extend restaurant ratings to food trucks within the city at the Dec. 4 meeting.

“The grading system provides consumers with more information about the overall operating condition of mobile food vendors, similar to what you would see in a restaurant of an A, B, or C rating,” explained Michele Masterson, senior analyst with the city.

The city currently allows food trucks to operate in Carlsbad, as long as they have the appropriate permits from the county.

Separately, food carts, like the coffee cart in front of the Dove library, do obtain permits from the city.

SAN DIEGO, CA – Some of San Diego’s best food trucks served up tasty dishes Tuesday as a fundraiser for Meals on Wheels.

Meals-on-Wheels-SD-Food-Truck-WarsFifteen food trucks parked at Kearny Mesa Subaru, offering everything from fish tacos to grilled cheese sandwiches to delicious desserts.

Twenty percent of the proceeds from Tuesday’s sales go directly to the Meals on Wheels program. The organization feeds about 1,200 seniors a month and for some, the meal deliveries are their only contact with the outside world.

“We’re visiting them every day, making sure they’re okay, that they haven’t fallen, that they don’t have any medical crisis and just spending some time and talking to them,” Debbie Case of Meals on Wheels said.

Meals on Wheels estimates they raised about $2,000 during Tuesday’s fundraiser.

Tamale food cart created by NSAD student Arnulfo Rodriguez

SAN DIEGO, CA –A design studio class at New School of Architecture and Design (NSAD) headed by instructor Hector Perez explored the unusual typology of human-propelled food carts. The project was done in collaboration with another NSAD design studio lead by NSAD instructor Casey Mahon that explored digital manipulations of surface. The integrated assignments challenged the students (in their second year of studies in the Bachelor of Architecture program) to explore the interaction possibilities of food carts in a parking lot near San Diego’s downtown ball park.

The hypothetical scenario –  in which sections of the parking lot could be designated as spaces for the food carts during tailgating events –  encouraged students to evaluate the relationships between sites and projects (the parking lot) and social dynamics (the tailgating scene). Such explorations of function, scale and site form the basis of any architecture or design project, and allows students to develop skills they can use in the future for projects as small as a food cart and as large as a skyscraper.

As many of our readers may know, my background is not in the culinary arena or even in journalism…its architecture. Due to the recession and the fast drop in the industry, I was forced to look for another field to work in. Luckily for me, I found the mobile food industry as it was picking up steam across the country.

Due to the fact that architecture and urban planning schools are looking at the mobile food industry for their students to investigate and to hone their skills on, means that the industry should not fear the label of being a short lived fad. Instead, mobile food should be looked at as a trend in the food industry that is growing and will even morph into areas that have yet to be explored.

You may have missed it, but the mobile food industry is growing faster than anyone would have guessed two years ago. It can be difficult to keep up with the new trucks and carts as they pop up throughout the country. Because of this, Mobile Cuisine Magazine assists our readers weekly by posting the names and information about these trucks, so if they happen to be in your area, you can begin to follow them, or at least keep any eye out for them on the roads and cart pods.
