San Jose Christmas in the ParkSAN JOSE, CA - While families bit into churros and navigated the winter carnival that is downtown San Jose during the holidays, the season of giving became a little less magnanimous around Christmas in the Park. And no, we’re not talking about the shooting.

Ryan Sebastian, the entrepreneur behind Moveable Feast, approached organizers months ago about providing some food options for the December event. They—well, specifically Christmas in the Park director Jason Minsky—apparently blew him off. Sebastian, however, was determined to expand the menu for downtown’s holiday guests.

He got permits from the city, posted up the Facebook invites for a one-night “Christmas Truck Lane,” as he called it, on S. Market Street, right across from the holiday fair. Minsky got wind of the plan and, leveraging his clout as head of a popular downtown event, summoned the San Jose PD to disband the food truck gathering. “This is a truly despicable move on your part,” Minsky fired off in an email to Sebastian a few days before Christmas, along with a declaration that he’ll never work with him because of the incident. Like, ever. So there.

Police arrived on scene and weren’t immediately able to dispatch Sebastian’s fleet. “They had to really dig through the books to find a violation,” he recalls. After a fair bit of on-site investigation, they found a citable technicality: the trucks lacked a peddler’s permit. Not Sebastian’s fault—the city should’ve told him—but still grounds for dismissal.

The city’s understaffed and controversy-shy police generally don’t divert crime-fighting resources to epicurian turf squabbles. They’ve declined to enforce food codes at St. James Park, where neighbors have petitioned Chief Larry Esquivel to crack down on illegal feedings of the homeless by do-gooders.

Minsky declined to talk about the skirmish. For Sebastian, the bigger issue is that Christmas in the Park needs to up its culinary game. Keep the cocoa and churros, he says, but ditch the nondescript fair food. “Carnie cuisine is not befitting of a world-class city such as San Jose,” Sebastian advised Minsky.

In our quest to keep our readers up to date with the latest stories relating to the food truck industry has compiled a list of the stories that hit the wire this past weekend from Binghampton, Miami, San Jose and Los Angeles.

September 20

Off the Wire Food Truck NewsFood trucks could be heading to downtown Binghamton – BINGHAMPTON, NY - Eli Enav peaked inside a bright orange Halal food cart on a downtown sidewalk Friday afternoon, just as a Styrofoam container filled with lamb meat smothered in sauteed onions and bell peppers emerged.

The 21-year-old Binghamton University student, from Washington, D.C., watched as the cart’s owner, Paul Muzzio, 23, applied a final touch to the dish called a gyro platter, covering it in his sweet and tangy version of a traditional tzatziki sauce, a yogurt, mint and chopped cucumber mixture.

Co-workers set-up gunman after stealing from lunch truck – MIAMI, FL - A group of co-workers turned the tables on a suspected crook after he robbed a lunch truck. The alleged robber thought he was getting help from a stranger, but it was all a set-up.

“Basically, we took care of the robber. We made it easy-peasy for the police,” said Daniel Quintero who chased down the suspected gunman.

Americans Hungry for Hipster Foods - So maybe the chance to taste the flaky spawn of a doughnut and croissant won’t get you lining up at the crack of dawn. Maybe you’re holding out for a burger nestled between fried ramen noodles. Or perhaps it’s the elusive McRib that moves you.

Whatever flies your foodie flag, it’s hard to deny that Americans love feeling part of something deliciously exclusive, that they clamor to taste trendy, hard-to-get morsels.

Microloans Surging in Silicon Valley - SAN JOSE, CA - A daycare provider needed cribs and high chairs. A coffee truck needed a generator. A couple renting party supplies needed to move from a garage into a storefront.
When these Silicon Valley small businesses needed an influx of cash, and fast, they didn’t find help at a bank. They turned instead to a type of financing more commonly associated with buying a sewing machine for a Guatemalan tailor or a tractor for an African farmer…microlending.

Food trucks to roll into LAX, continue weekly at Long Beach Airport – LOS ANGELES, CA - The food truck craze that has swept the nation will soon roll up to Los Angeles International Airport.

No, airport security won’t allow food trucks to pull to the curb of the terminal. Instead, an airport concession operator plans to install the shell of a food truck inside of Terminal 4. The fake truck will be outfitted inside with grills, pots, pans and other equipment to serve food.

Starting Nov. 1, the food truck will be operated by food truck chefs based in Los Angeles, who will rotate in once a year or so.

November is election season, but it’s also a time in which local municipalities give their voters the chance to pass changes to their laws which can affect the food service industry which includes mobile food vendors.

ballot Initiative

According to The National Restaurant Association in Washington, D.C., there are several measures around the country that could affect day-to-day operations for some operators. Those that they are watching concern minimum wage and the obesity issue.

San Jose, CA

  • Residents will choose whether or not to increase the minimum wage from $8 to $10 an hour. The San Jose initiative would be indexed to inflation, which would allow it to rise proportionately over time.

Albuquerque, NM

  • A vote on a minimum wage initiative, deciding whether to leave it at $7.50 per hour or raise it a dollar to $8.50. In addition, the measure seeks to raise the minimum wage for tipped employees from the current $2.13 an hour to 60 percent of the minimum wage level. Both wages would be tied to any increases in inflation and examined every year.

Richmond and El Monte, CA

  • Two proposed ballot initiatives would levy a one-cent-per-ounce tax and sugar-sweetened beverages in an effort to help combat the rising obesity problem.

Not that we suggest paying your food truck staff at minimum wage, but if you do and are in one of these areas, you may be a little more interested in getting out to the polls on November 6th to vote on these initiatives.

Does your area have a ballot initiative that will affect the mobile food industry not mentioned here? Please share it in the comment section below to help those in your area what they need to be concerned with.

Dead Dogs Hot Dogs

SAN JOSE, CA - From crispy California avocado tacos sprinkled with sesame seeds to coconut-raspberry cupcakes and espresso, the food-truck revolution has delightfully messed with American food and culture.

Now, an indelicate — perhaps hilarious — line has been crossed. Are we ready for mobile hot dogs served from the final rest stop, the clutches of death, the lair of vampires? The ghoulish geniuses behind a bit of mobile madness — Dead Dogs Ltd. — believe we are.

So does Priscilla Garcia, who was innocently driving through north San Jose recently when she, like many others, spotted a long, shiny black Cadillac hearse. It was parked at a gritty intersection that looked more like West Texas than Silicon Valley. The funeral coach had flames painted on the side and seemed to have unloaded a coffin on the side of the road.

Curious, Garcia pulled over, and to her surprise, what she saw was a hot dog cart masquerading as a coffin. The novelty made Garcia blurt, “Oh, I think I’ll have a hot dog today!” And gladly the vendor, Jevelyn Lincoln, served the cleaning company employee a steamed jalapeño dog and sent her back to work happy.

“I’m going to tell everyone in the office about this,” Garcia said.

That’s the way most days go for the Dead Dog entrepreneurs. Disbelieving drivers, thinking a hearse has crashed and popped out some poor soul in a casket, stop from sheer curiosity. But then, when they test the proffered franks, they’re hooked. And, as you might imagine, morbid jokes flow around the unusual business as thickly as mustard, relish and onions.

DMV graveyard

“I told my wife I was going to take her to a special place to eat dead people,” said Gerardo Diaz, an auto dismantler. “She didn’t believe me.” When his wife arrived, she laughed out loud and took pictures of Lincoln behind the hot dog coffin-steamer. Almost every customer does that very same thing.

Diaz asked Lincoln, “Have you ever thought of parking this at a cemetery?” No, she answered.

“That would be the perfect place,” he said. “After they bury the dead guy, they can get a hot dog.”

Lincoln promised, “I’ll mention the idea to the owner.” Actually, the boss, Salvatore La Barbera, already had an idea for serving the morbid franks at a place where bodies move even slower than at graveyards.

“I want to serve them outside every DMV office in the state,” he says. “Think about it. People are there because they are compelled to be there, and there’s no food around.”

Dead Dogs was born about a year ago, when La Barbera, a car collector and shopping center developer, looked up cars for sale on the Internet and noticed a Cadillac hearse for sale. On a lark, he submitted a lowball bid of $12,000 and was surprised to get it. When a friend picked up La Barbera’s new hearse, he phoned with news: The monstrous vehicle came with a real coffin.

“What am I going to do with that thing?” wondered La Barbera. Nothing at first. It wasn’t until he was sitting poolside at a hotel in Manila, the Philippines, that he thought about adapting the hearse for the food-truck revolution.

“It was just another idea that popped into my head.” At 64, the founder of Terracommercial is set for life and semiretired, but he remains a jack-of-all trades with a working-class soul. After learning how to weld and operate machinery on his grandfather’s cherry farm, he earned degrees in math and computer science from San Jose State and Stanford universities.

He started racing go-carts at age 10. These days he flies his own helicopter and an Aero L-39 Albatros jet-fighter training plane. He owns more than a dozen classic cars and tools around San Jose in a beefy Chevrolet SSR pickup. “It’s basically a Corvette,” he quipped, “with the body of a truck.”
