How We’re Marketing Our Coffee Truck Grand Opening

Hey fellow food truckers!

You’ve all been super helpful while I’ve been setting up my coffee truck called "The Rolling Cup" that will serve in Sacramento so I wanted to give back and share our marketing strategy for the grand opening. I have a background in marketing so if you have any questions about how to get more customers, I’d love to help out. If you have any other ideas let me know too!

Here’s what we’re planning for our coffee truck’s big day:

  1. Invite local online reviewers. Reach out to people who love reviewing spots on platforms like Yelp, Google, and TripAdvisor. Offer them a free coffee or specialty drink in exchange for an honest review of the experience. Honest reviews from trusted sources can bring in new customers quickly.
  2. Instagram influencers. Search for local Instagram accounts in your city. Use the “Places” tab to find people who post often about your area and seem to have a following. Invite them to swing by for a free latte, hoping they’ll post about it on their feed or story. The more local attention your truck gets, the better!
  3. Targeted Facebook ads. We’re creating a 30-second video showing off the truck and a couple of our best drinks, with background music and text that highlights what we offer. We’ll run it to a local audience, and anyone who watches at least 75% of the video will be retargeted in future ads. From there, we’ll build a lookalike audience and keep the ads rolling.
  4. Reach out to local reporters. Invite them to come cover the grand opening. We’re hoping to get a little press coverage since coffee trucks are still growing in popularity in our area.
  5. Facebook event page. We’ll create a Facebook event for the grand opening and post it on our truck’s page. People can RSVP, and as more show interest, it gives us social proof for others checking it out. The more buzz we create, the better.
  6. Go live on Facebook from my personal account. Most of my friends are local, so I’m planning to go live on Facebook during the event to show what we’re doing. This should get engagement and spread awareness quickly as friends comment and share it.
  7. Loyalty cards with a first stamp free. We’ll be handing out loyalty cards with the first stamp already marked. We’re not going to push it, but it’s a low-pressure way to encourage customers to come back. If they decide to toss it, no big deal, but we’re hoping the idea of working toward a free drink keeps them coming back for more. For example, our costs for a regular coffee are around $0.60, and we sell it for $4.50, so it makes sense to invest a little in the long-term loyalty of our customers.

Let me know if you have any other ideas!
