Why is Gratitude so Important in Building Relationships?

When thinking of the importance of gratitude in building relationships, two old songs come into my mind – “No Man Is An Island” by Joan Baez and “Sometimes” lyrics by the Carpenters.

To summarize, gratitude helps nurture relationships in the following ways:

• It shows that we give importance to the person who has done something good for us and that we acknowledge the help he has extended. With this, the existing relationship is strengthened.
• Saying that we are grateful is a way of connecting oneself to others. It can be a start of a relationship that may flourish with time.
• When we grow to be a grateful person, we become loving and kind with peace within our hearts. We are then able to maintain good relationships with those around us and easily forgive those who have done us wrong. Happy people are magnetic.

• When we are grateful, we acknowledge accepting help along the way. Knowing this we are more likely to help others either financially, spiritually, or simply be a better neighbor.

The relationships we have formed help us live life to the fullest. We may not consciously acknowledge the importance of these relationships but they help form us to be what we are now and what we are to become. It is then necessary that we be grateful to these people who have been there for us in order to maintain the relationship we now have with them or to even make said relationships better.

More often than not, we forget to say “Thank you” to those who cared for and loved us. With these examples, you’ll never overlook these good deeds again.
