DES MOINES, IA – It’s all true — Des Moines is going to have a “food truck scene.” Look at us all grown up and purty! And now the growing cadre of mobile eateries even has its own trade association, Legion of Food. Motto: “Wherever there is hunger, you will find us.” (Genius, that.)

For the “better late than never file,” the Des Moines City Council last week approved a measure to allow food trucks to operate legally. The pilot program is expected to launch in the next few weeks, allowing mobile vendors to set up shop in metered parking spaces in four designated downtown zones: Western Gateway; near the Iowa Events Center; west of the Polk County Courthouse; and the western East Village.

The group’s web site, legionoffood.org, is live if sparse. Zach Mannheimer, one of the players in the Des Moines food truck scene who pushed for the pilot program, said on his Facebook page that starting in April the site will be home base for all your food-truck info, including participating trucks, trucks for hire for private events and up-to-date information for vendors on licensing, inspections, etc.
