CANTON, NC – Canton leaders are considering changing a zoning ordinance that would allow food trucks on town streets.

They say the mobile food vendors would bring in needed revenues and help stimulate more business downtown. They say many neighboring towns allow food trucks and they should cash in as well.

“It’s been highly successful in Asheville and in Sylva and in Waynesville,” alderman Zeb Smanthers said. “And I think this board and myself, anything that any of these municipalities can provide, we can have in Canton.”

Tina Tuten runs a catering business and said she wants to bring her recently purchased food truck to Canton’s downtown.

“Of course I’d like for them to pass it,” Tuten said. “I think it will bring a lot of exciting things to Canton.”

“Bring in some young people and hopefully it might change some minds of people and maybe help start businesses in town,” Polly’s Florist Shop owner Vicki Gregg said. “But I wouldn’t want to see it hurt a restaurant that’s here and it’s established because we have so few.”
