PORTLAND, OR – The Portland City Council approved a $20,000 grant Wednesday morning to help repair damages at the Portland Mercado after eight of 10 food trucks were damaged over the weekend.

“The reality is these are hard-working, immigrant, small businesses who can’t afford to be out of business for one or two days and it is shameful that someone chose to damage their trucks which is their livelihood,” Commissioner Nick Fish said.

According to Mercado officials, six carts were broken into and two others were vandalized. Thieves stole cash, equipment and personal items, as well as ruined doors on many of the trucks.

Officials estimate the attack caused about $25,000 in real damages, as well as a loss of sales as food truck owners try to recover.
