KINGSPORT, TN – Joey Rusek doesn’t just serve barbeque out of a food truck. He also serves it to first responders and victims of natural disasters.

Rusek first responded to a natural disaster last year, when he joined Operation BBQ Relief -– a nonprofit organization -– after Hurricane Matthew. Now he and several other volunteers are hitting the road again, this time to serve those affected by Hurricane Harvey.

“For me, it’s just the fact that we can give back to someone who needs a hot meal,” Rusek said. “We can feed a hot meal to somebody in need.”

Rusek is the owner of Backdraft BBQ, an award-winning local food truck. He and six other volunteers left for Texas from Memphis around 5 a.m. Tuesday with food, smokers and other supplies in tow. They hoped to arrive by 10 p.m.
