Last night marked the return of The Great Food Truck Race and if the premiere of season 6 did anything else they showed that viewers have a lot of fun to look forward to.

SPOILER ALERT AHEAD!!!

The show starts in Santa Monica, California with introductions of the seven teams that will participate in this cross country culinary contest. Much like the first two seasons of the program, the food truck teams consist of existing food truck owners.

The Great Food Truck Race season 6 teams are:
  • Diso’s Italian Sandwich Society (New York, NY)
  • GD Bro Truck (Orange County, CA)
  • The Guava Tree Truck (Dallas, TX)
  • Pho Nomenal Dumplings (Raleigh, NC)
  • Postcards (Los Angeles,CA)
  • Spice it Up (Phoenix, AZ)
  • Waffle Love (Provo, Utah)

Each of the teams has a fun and unique story and it’s hard to pick a favorite…so far. For the sixth season Tyler Florence hosts the program and welcomes the teams as they show up with their trucks.

Chef Florence kicks the episode off with a quick fire test. The teams are to sell their signature dish and the first team to hit $200 in sales would be declared the winner.

The teams jumped to it and nearly every team started ring in sales as soon as they got their dishes prepped.

Spice It Up was first out of the gate, earning their $200, an additional $100 in seed money and a map to the next stop. The other teams, which had to stop selling immediately, were given an additional $66 dollars. Most teams made well over $100, but The Guava Tree took too long to prep their Cuban-inspired dish and only sold two portions for a $20 total.

The teams headed to Lake Havasu, AZ, but on the way Pho Nomenal Dumplings had a major issue with their aged truck (catastrophic engine failure and a small fire).

The team had to negotiate with a tow truck operator to take them to their selling locations with the promise to pay them back at the end of the challenge. The setback, however, did not derail their enthusiasm and they were able to continue the competition even though each change of location was going to cost them $100 out of their till.

THE GREAT FOOD TRUCK RACE COOKING CHALLENGE:

The trucks ended up receiving a selling challenge which required teams to prepare a fish and chips dish in honor of the London Bridge location. The first team to sell 20 would get an additional $500 in their till, something that would help Pho Nomenal Dumplings offset their towing fees.

DiSO’s Italian Sandwich Society won the challenge.

The Guava Tree also ran into a mechanical problem with their truck (generator) which completely shut them down for a short time, cutting dangerously into their selling time. After the fish and chips challenge, host Tyler Florence had no other surprises for the teams and they were allowed to continue selling until 8:00 PM.

Some teams found great locations around the area, some were told of great locations that turned out to be anything but, and two teams even took some time before selling to attend church.

With the teams lined up to get the results from Tyler Florence he announces their totals.

  • Waffle Love $4,977.00
  • Postcards  $3,215.00
  • GD Bro Truck $3,103.00
  • DiSO’s $2,955.00
  • Spice It Up $2,643.00

The first elimination came down to Pho Nomenal Dumplings and The Guava Tree. Unfortunately, their bad start on the first day showed up in the final results and The Guava Tree was eliminated.
