If you missed it, The Great Food Truck Race season 6 episode 6 (The Finale) aired Sunday night. Here’s the recap.

SPOILER ALERT!!!

The show started off with the teams in St. Louis, MO.

The Great Food Truck Race season finalists were:

  • Pho Nomenal Dumplings(Raleigh, NC)
  • Waffle Love(Provo, Utah)

Chef Florence kicks the final episode of in St. Louis, MO. Because of the love of BBQ in St. Louis the final two teams were given three proteins and 90 minutes to create a fantastic dish with each.

  • Chicken
  • Ground Beef
  • Pork Steak

The winner of the this head to head cook off were told they would be given a huge advantage later in the final contest. Alex & Frank were the guest judges and would choose a winning dish from each of the protein categories.

Waffle Love created a St. Louis-style chicken, BBQ pork steak and a Sundance burger. Pho-Nomenal created a Chopped chicken sandwich, Asian-inspired pork steak and a Stuffed BBQ burger. Pho-Nomenal won with their Chicken dish and Waffle Love with their pork steak. The final decision came down to the burger which due to Waffle Love’s over-cooking, Pho-Nomenal won this head to head challenge.

From here, the teams were directed to head to Springfield IL but could only sell products in $5 increments in honor of President Abraham Lincoln. (where Tyler mistakenly claimed was Abe Lincoln’s birth place). The teams worked through the day making sales from their $150 in seed money. After shutting down for the day, the teams headed to Chicago for the final leg of their trip.

THE GREAT FOOD TRUCK RACE – FINAL TEST:

The team met Chef Florence in Millennium Park and were given the instructions to the final part of this exciting season. The teams were to head into 3 ethnic sections of the city and sell 50 custom dishes in area: Chinatown, Little Italy and Greektown. The bonus prize the Pho team earned in the previous challenge was that in the first part of town, they only had to sell 20 dishes. The truck who finished selling their required dishes & checked in at Buckingham Fountain won the championship.

Both teams headed out and started selling, the Pho-Nomenal Dumplings truck raced through their first two stops rather quickly. They were already in Greektown before the Waffle Love Team left Chinatown. The last 50 in Greektown was tougher to sell for Pho, but they clearly were on their way to the title because of the speed of their sales.

While on their way to collect the $50K prize, Tyler called them up to inform them that they had sold all 50 of their dishes 2 blocks outside of the Greektown boundary (which is really only a 3 block section of one street in Chicago). Because of this error, the team had to head back to Greektown and sell 50 more dishes. This lead to a much closer finish.

After both teams sold their final dishes they packed up and headed to the iconic Buckingham Fountain to grab the title of Best Food Truck in America. The first team there was…

Pho Nomenal Dumplings

Congrats to the ladies from Raleigh, NC on this well deserved win. Who would have thought they had a chance when in the first episode their truck had a fatal break down and they had to go find a replacement truck to finish the rest of the route 66 Great Food Truck Race.
