Much like other cities across Texas, San Antonio has a burgeoning food truck scene. While it may not have the same numbers as cities such as Austin or Houston, it does have a few up and coming areas, like the Boardwalk on Bulverde food court. The Boardwalk is open Thursday-Sunday, and hosts about a dozen food trucks all located at this one spot in Northern San Antonio. One of the frequent participants is the Rickshaw Stop.

Meagan and Sameer Siddiqui are the owners of the Rickshaw Stop food truck which specializes in traditional Pakistani food. The couple opened the truck in April, 2011. The couple operates their truck with the assistance of their family. Sameer’s mom (Gety), his Aunt (Bina) and his Uncle (Shabbir.) Each recipe we use has been created and approved by the entire Siddiqui/Khan family. The family’s journey, which began in India and Pakistan, ended in San Antonio via New York.

The truck serves two main menu items; Pakistani kebabs and samosas along with dessert. According to their website, they are “fairly certain you’ve never eaten anything like the kebabs you will order from our truck, unless you are friends with a Pakistani family or you’ve spent extensive time in Pakistan.”

The Siddiqui’s approach to their menu is one of simplicity, but follow the common practice of most successful food trucks – “find something you are good at, and focus on that”. Their menu maybe is short and uncomplicated, but the food is fresh and delicious.

The team pays close attention to detail to make their flavors unique. For example, they marinate both the beef and chicken they use for at least 48 hours to ensure all of the Pakistani flavors are distributed throughout the meat – no exceptions.

Kebabs, look somewhat like a Mexican taco, but the flavors are very different. Wrapped in a Paratha, the beef or chicken Kebabs are packed with flavor.

Samosas are deep fried pillows of flavor but are smaller and lighter than the Indian versions you may have eaten in the past.

Kheer is a think rice pudding, made with rice milk, sugar, cardamom and rose water. They are topped off with crunchy chips of almonds and pistachios. If you are looking for something a bit more sweet, check out Sameer’s mother’s own recipe for Baklava. Her version has much less honey than other cultural attempts at this sweet treat. Sameer confesses that he has a bit of an addiction to crumbled Baklava stirred inside a bowl of Kheer.

If you don’t believe their customers that their food is good, take the word of the entire city as Team Siddiqui and the Rickshaw Stop were named the best restaurant in ALL of San Antonio.

The Rickshaw Stop food truck can be found around San Antonio and its surrounding neighborhoods throughout the week.
