My Advice for Building a Successful Email Newsletter
As mentioned earlier, I’ve managed to build an email newsletter with more than 50,000 active subscribers. Now, I should point out, it’s taken me a long time to get to this point. In fact, I’ve been blogging for more than 7 years so don’t expect to hit this point after a couple months.
Still, here are a two practical tips you can use to grow your list as quickly as possible:
- Give people a good reason to join. Make sure people know they’re going to get something good from you when they sign up. For example, I give away free case studies about successful food entrepreneurs. Maybe you could giveaway a coupon for a free drink at your coffee shop. Maybe a recipe sharing your trademark Pad Thai recipe so people can cook it at home.
- Provide many ways to subscribe. There should be more than one way people can subscribe to your email newsletter. Take for example on my own site, you can get to the email list from the “Join the Community” link located at the top of the website. I also include links here within the content of blog posts, the website footer, and social media. If you run a brick-and-mortar restaurant, you can also ask for your customers email address so you can send coupons.
Email Newsletter Statistics
Email newsletters continue to be one of the best ways to market a business online. Email marketing is a powerful strategy for ma-and-pa restaurants or coffee shops that use this medium to share menu updates, coupons, and special events. Most email marketing services will let you message thousands of email recipients for less than $30 a month. It’s hard to beat that low price for this level of reach.
Below are email newsletters statistics that demonstrate the power of this marketing method:
- From July 2019 to June 2020, the average click-through rate for emails is 2.13% while the unsubscribe rate is 0.12%
- Email marketing is still preferred as one of the marketing strategies used by businesses since its return of investment is $42 for every $1 spent.
- Email marketing is more important than social media marketing. 60% say that they’ve bought from a business from a marketing email they read while only 12.5% say they would consider buying a product on social media. Both strategies are still important in the growth of one’s business.
Timing is important when sending out emails you want to be read and opened. The worst days of the week to send your marketing emails are on the weekends while the best days are Tuesdays and Thursdays. As for the time, 8 am, 1 pm, 4 pm, and 6 pm are the hours you should be looking into sending those emails since this is when people are online most of the time.
- Marketing automation is being used by an average of 51% of companies.
- It’s more favorable when an email is personalized or created to look like it was specifically for the recipient. 88% of users agree that they are likely to engage with an email that is personalized for them. 62% of emails are also opened when a subject line is personalized.
- The average number of words in an email is 434.48. It also takes 3.3 minutes to read it. Of course you can make your emails as long or short as needed.
With this data above and the name ideas provided, you’re well equipped to start your own email newsletter. Let me know what you think of these ideas.
