Let’s take a time machine back to the 1920s when you couldn’t legally enjoy a glass of whiskey. When alcohol sales became illegal, speakeasy establishments came about to serve people that still want to drink, dance, and party with other people.

Speakeasy’s, also known as “blind pig” or “blind tiger” is a secret, hidden, or illicit establishment that sold alcoholic beverages during the era when prohibition was implemented. Even though prohibition was struck down 80 years ago, speakeasy inspired bars are still thriving. Here are over 200 clever speakeasy business names and passwords to consider for a new business.

Why Was Drinking Illegal During Prohibition?

Bars were illegal during the prohibition period because it was said to have a goal in reducing crime and corruption, solving social problems, reducing tax burden by prisons and houses. All of this put together would improve health and hygiene. Governments of the time viewed alcoholic drinks as the root cause of violence. Despite the fact that they had hoped to improve society by reducing drinking, it didn’t all go according to plan.

During prohibition, all sale, manufacturing, or even transportation of alcohol was illegal. This resulted in an underground economy that operated the logistics of the liquor industry. These operations were often owned by mobsters and other shady characters.

This prohibition on the use of alcoholic beverages was instituted in the 1920s because it was believed at the time that limiting the manufacturing of alcoholic beverages would allow more resources, such as grain used to make alcohol, to be allocated to the war effort. Prior to the implementation of this law, upper-class consumers supplied their houses with alcoholic beverages for consumption, purchasing liquor merchants and even wholesalers, all of which emptied bar stations and other saloons. As a result, lower-class institutions were set up to sell alcoholic beverages during Prohibition, and these were referred to as “blind pigs” or “blind tigers.”

A number of events occurred before the repealing of the restriction that explains why this law was deemed a failure. One of these reasons is that, in the long run, the decline in alcohol consumption resulted in a rise in the prison population due to people opting for illegal methods of purchasing alcoholic beverages.

Some of them became illegal alcohol traffickers, including sneaking into venues where there were known to be alcoholic beverages available. Following that, some people formed partnerships with pharmacies to manufacture “medicinal” alcoholic goods, which, unfortunately, resulted in alcohol-related deaths related to poisoning and tainted wine.

In 1933, Prohibition was finally abolished after three states voted to ratify it in the 21st Amendment, allowing for the restoration of the freedom of legal alcohol selling and consumption. The dark days were officially over and everyone of legal drinking age could enjoy an adult beverage once again.
