Who is the 2011 Food Truck Rookie of the Year?

Food trucks have been popping up all around the country (for that matter all across the world). Since this past June we have tried to keep an eye on the trucks surfacing on the streets and to our surprise, there has not been much of a slowdown of trucks or cities around the country that have spawned new trucks (we have seen an average of at least a half dozen new trucks every week).

2011 Food Truck Rookie of the Year

Because of this we wanted to ask our readers to share their favorites with us. We are asking you to submit your choice for the 2011 Food Truck Rookie of the Year. You may submit your choice via the poll below.

We will collect your submissions through the remainder of the year, and in January we will present a poll of the top ten trucks or carts submitted, so that you may help us choose the Rookie of the Year. You may submit as many trucks or carts from your area as you like, but they must be submitted separately to be included. There are no requirements to the location (hint hint to Canadian and overseas food truck owners), type or style of food this mobile vendor sells, so feel free to submit a new savory food vendor, dessert truck or even a mobile hot dog vendor. The only stipulation is that they opened for business after December 31st of 2010.

UPDATE: We would like to thank all of those who voted for their choice of rookie food truck of the year. We originally had planned on only allowing 10 trucks into this poll, but due to the fact that we had a large number of trucks tied with over 50 votes each, we have opened this poll up to 15 trucks. We will keep this poll open for the next 2 weeks to make sure you are all able to get your votes in. Once the votes are counted we will announce the winner.

So get out and let everyone know…tell us who your Rookie Mobile Food Vendor of 2011 is.

Richard is an architect by degree (Lawrence Technological University, Southfield, Michigan) who began his career in real estate development and architectural planning. In September of 2010 he created Mobile Cuisine Magazine to fill an information void he found when he began researching how to start a mobile hotdog cart in Chicago. Richard found that there was no central repository of mobile street food information anywhere on the internet, and with that, the idea for MCM was born.

We are delighted to have been nominated for Food Truck Rookie of the year. The Crave Truck was quite a feat for a high-schooler to launch in the University of Illinois community. We make our Belgian-style Liege Street Waffles from scratch each day in our certified mobile-kitchen. We are delighted in the response bringing “street food that people crave” to the Hamlet of Champaign-Urbana. Thanks for your support!!

Zydeco Bistro for the rookie food truck of the year!!!!! Chef John Shultz has entered the food truck industry in Cleveland, Ohio in early spring of 2011 and has taken his job and industry in the great lakes region by storm! His Creole/Cajun cuisine is hands down the best food and most authentic out side of Louisiana that can be found. His heritage, being from Louisiana, can defiantly be seen in his menu and skills as a top competitor for this award.
Chef Johnny has been an advocate for the regional ACF chapters, local food market promoting and for promoting mobile food service in regions that feel threatened by the mobile food service industry. He has been relentless in these promotions as seen on Fox 8 News and continues to strive with introducing mobile food service to those in the Northeast Ohio region.
Cleveland has been making its mark on the food truck industry and has even gone so far as to surpass NYC in popularity. With the addition of so many food trucks in the region in 2011, Zydeco Bistro is by far the best “New Guy on the Block”. Well respected by is peers and the “go to” chef when in need of assistance, he has earned a spot among the best in the country in such a short time.
If you want to meet a chef that is not only dedicated to the food that he serves but to the community in which it is delivered than please check out Chef Johnny at http://zydecobistrollc.com/

I vote for Famous Naters in Chatanooga, TN

  30. Famous Nater's World Famous Jan 9, 2012 at 9:06 pm

It is great when all of our hard work is noticed, making all of those early mornings and late nights worth it. Getting the word out that Chattanooga has a great street food scene is yet another bonus of being nominated for Rookie of the year. This is a fantastic contest with lots of great trucks. I’m sure that all of the other truck owners in the running are as passionate about serving great food as I am. Serving people great food is really the most important part of the food truck movement.

  31. Celina Jan 10, 2012 at 8:56 am

  40. Dad Jan 11, 2012 at 10:44 am

Nathan is uncompromising in providing each customer with the absolute best ingredients, combined to provide a delicious experience. The untold story is; Nathan didn’t just purchase a food truck, he actually built it! Every screw, wire, rivet, and piece of equipment was installed by him. Held to the very same standards as brick & mortar restaurants, he has consistently received 99’s on health inspections, which surpass many restaurants. I want to THANK everyone who has supported, & voted for, Famous Nater’s World Famous. He has put his heart, mind, and passion into this food truck. I am a very, very proud Dad.

  41. Paula Metoxen Jan 11, 2012 at 5:32 pm

We love our Kangaroostaurant in Appleton WI! Please factor in the size of the city when you are compiling results. Appleton has a population of 78086 and has garnered 1338 votes as of this post. Staff Meal Food truck in Boston has gathered 2700 votes but the population more than 7 times larger–over 600,000! I think it would make sense to consider a “large city” and “small city” award!

  42. Dan Jan 11, 2012 at 7:02 pm

Another vote for the Kangaroostaurant! Not only do they make delicious, local grown food, but they are the first food truck in our area. Since they hit the road, several more trucks have either started or will be starting in the next few months. Thanks to the Kangaroostaurant for blazing the trail for Food Trucks in Northeast Wisconsin!

  43. Dee Jan 12, 2012 at 2:13 pm

Maybe if you spelled FREMONT, CA correctly that truck would get more votes!!

  44. Mobile Cuisine Jan 12, 2012 at 2:16 pm

Thanks Dee, we have the issue resolved.

  45. Stacy Salfrank Jan 12, 2012 at 2:24 pm

  52. Phil Stephens Jan 17, 2012 at 3:26 am

Why was voting suspended? We were about to feature our favorite truck on our local media to give it a push. . We had prepared radio and television spots to support our markets contender. With yesterday being a holiday and today being the last day listed to vote, we have wasted alot of resources. So therefore we are curious as to why voting was cut short. We expect an explaination . . .

  53. Mobile Cuisine Jan 17, 2012 at 8:04 am

Voting ended on Sunday night. The polling was run for two weeks, and felt that cutting it at the end of Sunday was fair since we made the announcement numerous times via social media.

  54. James Vincent Jan 17, 2012 at 9:44 pm

I am interested in starting up a food cart selling soft pretzels with organic locally produced mustard condiments. How can i get a business plan for something simple as soft pretzels?

  55. Mobile Cuisine Jan 18, 2012 at 7:40 am

The pretzels are merely the style of food you will be serving. The base business plan will need to be based on a food truck model. I know this doesn’t help you right now, but a book I am writing will cover this topic, but it will not be released until July.
