Growing up, my grandfather lived on a rural farm in Canada and would collect rain water in a variety of big blue barrels made of plastic that were placed around the property alongside the gutter systems of his garage, home, and barn back in the 1980s. I remember asking my grandfather why he collected this water when I was about 6 – 7 years old. His response?

My grandfather told me to think of the rainwater like coins and the barrels like a piggy bank. Grandpa saved the rain in these barrels to help his garden grow and to provide water to 3 – 4 cows that roamed the property. The was Grandpa’s way of saving water, being a bit more self reliant, and helping the Earth too.

Rainwater Harvesting Quotes

Jarod Kintz: “A flower blooms in my heart. You may call that love, but I call it water conservation.”

Bindi Irwin: “I want my children and my grandchildren to live in a world with clean air, pure drinking water, and an abundance of wildlife, so I’ve chosen to dedicate my life to wildlife conservation so I can make the world just a little bit better.”

Eric Burdon: “Having lived in the arid deserts of Southern California since the 1970s, my interest in water conservation is a very personal concern. Water! The source of life! Some people are squandering the world’s most precious resource while others have too little clean water to drink.”

George Aiken: “True conservation provides for wise use by the general public. The American people do not want our resources preserved for the exclusive use of the wealthy. These land and water resources belong to the people, and people of all income levels should have easy access to them.”

Mark Udall: “Our livelihood is intimately tied to the food we eat, water we drink and places where we recreate. That’s why we have to promote responsibility and conservation when it comes to our natural resources.”

Naveen Jain: “‘Being green’ is commendable, but I hope that people don’t take too much pride and self-adoration because they shut off the water when they brushed their teeth. The truth of the matter is, conservation alone will do little to save our planet.”

In anticipation of next spring, I’ve already purchased a small cistern that will hold 50 gallons of rain water and placed it in my backyard. I plan on using this to help water my garden and become somewhat more self sustaining. It’s also a way for me to keep the memory of my grandfather alive while doing a small part to conserve water where I live.
