FAQs about the KFC Menu

What menu items have been discontinued at KFC?

Double Down

The iconic Double Down sandwich, a limited-time offering, garnered major social media attention due to two fried filets replacing buns. Somewhat surprisingly, the calorie count in a Double Down was even higher than that of a Big Mac. This was a hyper indulgent meal that pushed the limits of what you could do with a sandwich. Some consumers, considered it friend chicken overload and I can certainly understand why.

Pickle Fried Chicken

KFC offered its Extra Crispy Chicken marinated in a unique pickle sauce, made from buttermilk and containing classic pickle flavors such as dill, vinegar, onion, and garlic. For a limited time only, customers could get bone-in pieces, tenders, or sandwiches, all topped with pickle slices and drenched in the pickle sauce.

Kentucky Grilled Chicken

At one point, KFC made a daring move away from its signature blend of fried chicken by introducing Kentucky Grilled Chicken. Infused with the same signature blend of “11 herbs and spices” used in KFC’s Original Recipe chicken this oven-roasted option has fewer calories, fat, and salt than its predecessor. Unfortunately, Kentucky Grilled Chicken didn’t sell in high enough numbers and was cut from the menu.

Cheetos Sandwich

This limited-edition sandwich featured crunchy Cheetos and a secret Cheetos sauce added to a classic chicken sandwich. This combination of comfort food is made up of a crispy chicken filet smothered in Cheetos sauce and nestled in a KFC bun with mayonnaise and a helping of regular Cheetos. You’ve got to hand it to research and development for the creative idea, but ultimately the sales never came for this sandwich.

Other discontinued items at KFC over the years include:

  • Apple Turnover
  • Snacker
  • Zinger
  • Potato Wedges
  • Popcorn Chicken
  • Original Recipe Boneless
  • Kentucky Roast Beef
  • Beyond Fried Chicken
  • Crispy Colonel Sandwich

Are there any discounts you can claim at KFC?

In most KFC locations, seniors can enjoy a discount of up to 10% off their purchase. However, since KFC locations are franchised, the discounts may vary depending on the franchise owner / operator. Some locations may even offer a free drink to seniors in lieu of a discount. To be eligible for the senior discount, you need to present a valid ID with photo and birth date.

Military personnel can also receive a special discount of 10% – 20%. This discount varies by location so be sure to ask your local KFC for more details. To take advantage of this special offer, simply show your Military ID at a participating location.

Besides the senior and military discounts, the KFC app offers the top KFC deals, coupons and free fried chicken. Sign up for the KFC email (by using the app or website) to get specials and coupons not available anywhere else. KFC currently doesn’t have a reward program in the US just yet, but they may very well introduce one in the future. It seems like almost every competitor has done so already.

Of course, KFC has always been known to send out coupon mailers as well. Don’t just throw away your junk mail when you get it from the mail box, you could be discarding valuable coupons at KFC.

What are the most popular menu items at KFC?

Original Recipe Chicken Bucket Meal

The Chicken Bucket Meal is by far the best selling item at KFC. It provides a wide range of choices, perfect for households with picky eaters since you can pick a variety of sides like coleslaw, mashed potatoes, or French fries. You can choose from an 8-piece bucket, a 12-piece bucket, or a 16-piece bucket and you also have the option to get the variety bucket that comes with both dark and white meat.

KFC Famous Bowl

Famous Bowls from KFC are freshly made and come with a base of creamy mashed potatoes, complemented by crunchy chicken chunks, sweet corn, and hot homestyle gravy, all topped with a 3-cheese blend. This is a filling lunch that’s ideal for an individual.

Chicken Little

A crispy piece of chicken is nestled between two sesame seed buns, while creamy mayo and a fresh pickle provide the perfect toppings. Plus, you can get it in a variety of flavors – making it ideal for when you’re on the go. This can be a snack or buy a couple to have an affordable meal.

Mashed Potatoes and Gravy

These potatoes are the pinnacle of fast food with a light and fluffy texture paired with a surprisingly slightly spicy gravy. This savory topping is what truly makes this side dish stand out- it’s incredibly rich and salty, so it’s probably not the healthiest choice. But the flavor is so good, it’s worth enjoying as a treat every once and awhile. This is a side that goes down easy.

Is there a secret menu at KFC?

Poutine

Combining some of the tastiest items from KFC, French fries, cheese curds, and gravy make up this dish inspired by Poutine from our friends to the north. Popular in Canada this dish is sure to make your mouth water with the thought of hot cheese and KFC gravy poured over fries.

Build-Your-Own Bowl

Their restaurants have the usual sets of options, but now you can customize with your favorite ingredients. Go wild with extra bacon, gravy, cheese and even fries. Create something new, something you’ll love, and keep it a secret.

KFC Triple Down

For the brave, hearty, and passionate food lover this “sandwich” with three chicken patties, cheese, and bacon without the bun is not one to be taken lightly. It takes an appetite to scarf down this greasy, fatty, and oh-so-filling sandwich. The sheer magnitude of cholesterol and fat is staggering with this secret item.

Are there any menu items for specialty diets?

When you think of KFC, you think of delicious deep-fried chicken, crispy french fries, and a whole lot of grease. While there is no denying that the dishes of KFC are absolutely delicious, they are unfortunately not the healthiest choice when it comes to fast food. KFC’s primary target audience comprises of teenagers and families. It’s hard to find a more affordable option that can feed a family of 4 – 8 people depending on the meal size you order. The menu offers a range of offerings for adults, especially for those with a low budget.

KFC is also known for its marketing campaigns and its use of creative visuals and messaging to reach its target audience. KFC also leverages social media to build relationships with customers and create a sense of community among patrons. KFC has managed to remain one of the largest and most successful fast-food franchises due to it’s quality food and funny marketing campaigns.

It all started when Harland Sanders created the famous KFC recipe. It was a blend of 11 secret herbs and spices, and it was written on the door of his kitchen. Sanders spent the next decade perfecting his original recipe and cooking at his gas station in Corbin, Kentucky. Word soon spread about the delicious KFC chicken, and in 1940 Sanders opened his first restaurant. Interestingly, it was until Sanders was 40 years of age that he opened his first location showing it’s never too late to start something big.
