FAQs about Pieology

Which menu items have Pieology discontinued?

Over the years, this beloved restaurant has seen its fair share of changes – some items have come and gone, while others have stood the test of time. In this section, let’s reflect on several discontinued items at Pieology.

Sweet & Smoky BBQ Pulled Pork Pizza

This discontinued menu item pair pizza and barbecue. The Sweet & Smoky BBQ Pulled Pork Pizza takes center stage with its luscious hand-shredded pulled pork. Crowned with fresh red onions and fragrant cilantro, it epitomizes a flavor symphony. To elevate the experience, Pieology’s tangy BBQ After-Bake sauce is generously drizzled on top. I’m not sure what could go wrong with this pairing, but you won’t find it on the menu any longer.

BBQ Luau Pizza

This was a limited-time menu item drawing inspiration from tropical flavors. This enticing creation featured a harmonious blend of savory and sweet notes, anchored by a base of rich BBQ sauce and a layer of gooey Mozzarella cheese. The addition of tender, all-natural chicken and savory bacon further elevates the flavor profile, while including luscious Del Monte pineapples adds a refreshing, fruity contrast. What set this pizza apart is the crowning glory – crispy French’s Fried Onions, providing a satisfyingly crunchy and flavorful element.

Handcrafted Deep Dish

Pieology’s Premium Deep Dish crust option represented a departure from the norm, embracing a thicker and more filling crust. What set it apart was the meticulous hand-pressing process undertaken the night before, allowing the dough to rise gradually, resulting in a crust that was nothing short of nap-worthy.

Red Velvet Cookie

The Red Velvet Cookies made their debut as a seasonal offering coinciding with the celebration of National Cookie Day. These scrumptious treats were carefully crafted with a medley of chocolate goodness, including velvety white chocolate chips, Hershey’s milk chocolate, decadent semi-sweet chocolate chunks, and luscious milk chocolate chunks.

Lemon Blueberry Cookie

The Lemon Blueberry cookies were characterized by the zesty essence of natural lemon and the sweetness of dried wild blueberries, all encased in a tender and chewy cookie. These cookies were temporarily added to the menu to celebrate National Blueberry Day. For now, the Lemon Blueberry cookies have bid farewell to the menu, but there’s hope on the horizon next year.

Who is the target audience of Pieology exclusively college kids?

Of course not! Diners young, old, and every age in between enjoy a quality slice open-flame pizza. But it would be easy to feel like college kids are the primary target audience if you reside in Southern California.

The first Pieology pizzeria opened its doors in Fullerton, California, in 2011, a short stroll away from the campus of California State University, Fullerton. This wasn’t a shot in the dark; it was a calculated decision tapping into the college lifestyle. The campus environment provided a ready-made customer base that was large, diverse, and hungry.

Keep the pizza safe while driving.

But why did the Pieology concept resonate so well with the college crowd in SoCal? A demographic potentially with more access to a diverse range of food options than anywhere else on the planet? Let’s slice it up.

  • Speed and Convenience: Between lectures, study sessions, and the social whirlwind of college life, students are always on the go. Pieology’s fast service meant that grabbing a bite didn’t have to slow down their day.
  • Affordability: With budgets often tighter than their study schedules, college students are always hunting for value. Pieology offered a dining experience that was friendly to their wallets, making it a repeat destination.
  • Customization: In an age where personalization is king, Pieology reigned supreme. The ability to craft your own pizza with a variety of toppings catered to the individual tastes and dietary preferences of the young and diverse student body.
  • Proximity: The success of the first location led to the opening of a second Pieology near the University of California, Irvine, in 2012. The pattern was clear: being close to campus life was a major ingredient in their recipe for growth.
  • Trendiness: Fast-casual was (and is) on-trend, and Pieology was riding the wave. It wasn’t just about eating; it was about being seen in the right place, and Pieology, with its modern vibe and Instagram-worthy pizzas, fit the bill.
  • Health Options: Today’s young adults are more health-focused than previous generations. Pieology’s fresh ingredients and customizable menu allowed them to choose healthier options without sacrificing taste.

In the early days, Pieology’s growth strategy was concentrated on company-owned locations in Southern California with a clear strategy of opening units in areas with a high density of college students. This wasn’t just about chasing a market thought—it was about embedding their brand into the college lifestyle of a certain area.

It’s clear that Pieology’s early success wasn’t just about serving up good pizza. It was about understanding their customers—where they lived, what they valued, and how they liked to eat. By aligning their business model with preferences among this younger demographic, Pieology didn’t just open restaurants; they created community hubs that fed both the stomach and the soul of the college experience.
