FAQs about the Taco Bueno Menu
What menu items have been discontinued at Taco Bueno?
Although with only over 140 operating stores nationwide across 7 states, Taco Bueno has been around since 1967. You can be sure there have been many new recipes as well as discarded ones. And because they are fairly small given their number of locations, it’s quite a challenge to fish out any vintage menu items off Taco Bueno.
Luckily, the restaurant itself conducted an online survey back in 2019 asking their fans which discontinued items they would like to see back on the menu. The comment section was a gold mine of discontinued Taco Bueno menu items. Many asked for their old recipes back including their “old” queso, tacos, and quesadillas. However, a couple of names kept popping up like an old mantra and I’ll be sharing them with you here.
For only 99 cents, you could get a fill of 100% fresh ground beef, chili sauce, and cheddar cheese tucked between two warm buns. It was a limited-time item menu back in 2014 that apparently spoke to the masses’ hearts and stomachs thanks to its taste and price. There is no news of Taco Bueno considering a reappearance of this beloved burger even as a limited-time offer again, but many fans out there still hold on dearly to it.

Just like the Taco Burger, the Chicken Empanada was a limited-time item priced at 99 cents released back in 2013. Made with real, fresh chicken and came with a sour cream cheese dip, that too was unfortunately discontinued. One customer who’s had the luck of trying out this empanada even compared it to Chili’s Southwest Eggrolls in taste.
Are there any discounts you can claim at Taco Bueno?
Taco Bueno offers a 10% senior discount for their customers aged 60 and older with some locations giving you a price break at 55. Simply show a valid ID. As for students, sadly, the chain does not offer discounts. What you can do to get perks is to join their loyalty program called the Buenohead Club and get member-only offers and fresh news. As an added bonus you’ll get a coupon for free Cheesecake Chimichangas 2-pack when you buy a full-priced platter.
Taco Bueno is not big on coupons and weekly deals, however, they do have regular gift card giveaways. One was recently held online in December of 2022.
What are the most popular menu items at Taco Bueno?
Aside from their tacos, either soft or hard shell, Taco Bueno boasts other savory meals that are popular amongst customers. We’ll look at 3 of my top picks below.
MexiDips & Chips
You’ll be devouring a plate of crispy tortilla chips that come with guacamole made from fresh avocados. A fun way to eat your chips would be having the queso dip and refried bean side served in their own tortilla bowls. That’s what the MexiDips & Chips is all about.
As the restaurant advises you need to come hungry for this platter. It is stacked with a bunch of Taco Bueno menu items like their beef or chicken Chilada topped with spicy chili sauce and melted queso, one crispy beef taco, one beef muchaco, and completed with refried beans, a side of melted queso, sour cream, guacamole, seasoned Mexican rice, a generous serving of tortilla chips. Now that is what you call a platter.

This offers you a soft flour tortilla packed with seasoned ground beef, a melted blend of cheddar and pepper jack cheese, and chili sauce. It’s simple, savory, and proves you don’t need all the fancies to fulfill your munchies.
Is there a secret menu at Taco Bueno?
No. Sadly, Taco Bueno does not have a secret menu at this time.
Are there any Taco Bueno menu items for specialty diets?
Mexican cuisine restaurants can generally make an easy shift towards vegan and vegetarian options. However, what is Mexican food without savory meat recipes? Still Mexican, of course! They have a lot of original recipes that are offered on a silver platter to vegetarians. Let’s check them out below.
- Veggie Salad Bowl
- Veggie Rice Bowl
- Black Bean Burrito
- Potato Sticks
- Mexican Rice
- Cilantro Lime Rice
- Black Beans
- Cinnamon Chips
As for vegan options, Taco Bueno serves their Black Beans and Cilantro Lime Rice Platter, and Black Beans and Mexi Rice at select locations. Check in at your local Taco Bueno to see if they have these on the menu. Remember to order these without sour cream to make them completely vegan.
Who is the target audience of Taco Bueno’s menu?
For many years, Taco Bueno wasn’t sure who they were marketing to. In fact, the company registered a nine-year stretch of declining sales. Obviously, a trajectory like that is not sustainable longterm.
Since rebranding in that kicked off in 2014, the company has been laser focused on serving authentic Tex-Mex made with healthy ingredients and in-house salsas.
Like so many QSR’s, the is trying to woo the now adult Millennial demographic. One way they’ve done this is by position their food as an elevated, better for you version of Taco Bell.
Since the rebrand Taco Bueno has been recognized as “America’s Best Mexican Restaurant” by People Magazine. The company has also been gradually winning back younger customers and look poised for further growth over the next 5 years.
Before entering the world of franchising and scaling the number of units, Taco Bueno would make all their recipes from scratch. Every meal was guaranteed to be fresh and hand-made. As the transition of processed and packaged food sets in, Taco Bueno still promises ingredients are all made fresh, just faster and more convenient.
