Panera Bread made the decision to discontinue one of their most popular sandwiches, the Sierra Turkey Sandwich. This sandwich was a fan favorite for its unique flavor profile. This was made with oven-roasted turkey, Asiago cheese, sun-dried tomato mayo, and baby spinach on Asiago focaccia bread. Although the sandwich is no longer available at Panera, there are still some copycat recipes available online. However, none of them quite capture the original flavor of the Sierra Turkey Sandwich in my humble opinion.
Asian Sesame Chicken Salad
What made this salad so special? Key ingredients were toasted sesame seeds, Mandarin oranges, and crispy wonton strips. The sesame seeds add a nutty flavor and a crunchy texture, while the Mandarin oranges provide a sweetness that compliments the savory flavors of the chicken and salad dressing.

If you’ve ever eaten Panera Bread’s Fontina Grilled Cheese then you know how good it was. It was a warm and melty sandwich stuffed with melted cheese, cheddar and fontina cheeses, bacon with caramelized onions. The sandwich has been very popular since its introduction, which is why people were surprised when we found out it had been discontinued. When it comes to food, Panera Bread has a solid track record of catering to its most affluent customers who skew toward women, Asian Americans, and particularly, the younger generations. The most popular meal occasions are casual lunches and a quick bite, but Panera’s target audience is young and middle-aged people from middle and upper-middle-class households.
This is no surprise considering that their menu includes soups, salads, sandwiches, and pastas as well as soups made from scratch daily. The secret to Panera Bread’s success? They’ve created an environment where people can eat freshly-made food that’s made with integrity.
Is Panera Bread considered to be an expensive restaurant?
There’s no shortage of people complaining about the price of Panera Bread food on Reddit. Of course, you’ll find complaints about the price of even the lowest cost fast-food joints if you really want to on this website.
While I think you’d be hard pressed to say Panera Bread is expensive there’s more than a handful of menu items that are overpriced. Here are a couple easy targets for criticism.
- The grilled cheese sandwich costs $8. There’s nothing particularly unique about this sandwich either. There’s no bacon, tomatoes, or a fancy sauce. The current sandwich contains cheddar cheese between two pieces of sourdough bread. This is a slightly elevated adult version of grilled cheese sandwich, but the price / value exchange is up for debate.
- As mentioned earlier, a tough one for me is the lineup of chicken sandwiches. The Signature Take Chicken Sandwich and The Spicy Take Chicken Sandwich both cost $12.59. Want avocado added to the sandwich? That will be an additional $0.99 please. Again, even after taking into account food inflation you could pay less for this sandwich at a higher end sit-down restaurant.
Despite my criticisms of this restaurant, I still enjoy it. My kids like it too and they regularly order cups of the chicken noodle soup. It’s one of the few places my entire family can seem to agree on even if the prices of select items raise eyebrows.
